Arts Commissions

Why include art in the new buildings?

Visioning day at the Watershed, July 2003 - Image 2

Arts commissions can make the hospital environment more welcoming and homely. Involving service users in the creation of artworks can also increase enjoyment, learning and self-esteem.

There is a growing body of evidence that proves the value and impact of the environment and the arts on healing.

The use of arts has been proven to:

  • Promote wellbeing
  • Reduce stress
  • Reduce lengths of stay
  • Reduce the use of medication
  • Lead to fewer incidences of aggression
  • Create improved working conditions and increase staff retention
  • Increase positive public awareness of mental health issues

How many commissions are there?

The programme of integrated commissions for Moving On includes artworks for 15 new units or buildings. For these new buildings there are a total of 30 commissions. They range from water features and artworks for the gardens, to specially designed flooring, textile and entrance glazing commissions.

Who decided what the commissions should be?

The ideas for the commissions were developed by Willis Newson following extensive consultation with service users, staff, architects and other key stakeholders. Initial ideas were presented at a visioning day held at the Watershed in July 2003 attended by a wide range of people involved in arts and mental health across Avon. Proposals were then firmed up following further meetings and discussions with service users and staff from individual units.
