Draft designs

In September 2004, Martin presented 2 designs for the entrance glazing Blue and Leaf:

Blue is a wash of beautiful blue 'antique' glass, spread across the space above the entrance lobby, punctuated by simple shapes in primary colours and a horizontal band of wavy, thin etched lines which show white against the blue. The same design is continued in large panes on either side of the lobby with a narrow band of the same colours worked into the front glazed area, to make the glass entrance door clearly visible.

Martin chose this design for the calming sense that a wash of colour invokes, particularly blue for its links to sky and water and because blue was the colour mentioned most during consultation sessions. 'Antique' glass is when coloured glass is hand-blown across a flat surface to create a very pure, translucent pane of glass which is then bonded to a sheet of toughened glass to strengthen it.

One staff member commented on the design: "I imagine it will look great on fairly gloomy wintry days - reminding one of blue skies and on sunny days will be wonderful with sun shining through and casting colourful shadows in the entrance... I found it cheerful, vivacious and capable of raising spirits..."

Leaf is a design of layers of leaf images using screen-printing onto the glass, which have been computer-generated enlarging Photographic images of different leaves and flowers and overlapping them. The colours for this design are from the warmer end of the spectrum, a palette of pinks, golden yellows and oranges with accents of bright turquoise and lilac.

Martin arrived at this design in response to feedback suggesting working with the immediate surroundings and natural environment of the new unit. He suggested that by working with service users and staff to collect and observe natural objects, he could create imagery which could be developed and incorporated into the final design.
