North Somerset: Coast Entrance Pathway - David Watson

David Watson has been appointed to work on the commission to design and fabricate the external pathways that lead from the public pavement to the two entrances of the Mental Health Resource Centre at Diamond Batch.

The commission will be carried out in collaboration with a local school, Priory Secondary School.

There will be two user groups catered for at the Resource centre: Adult and Older Adult. Possible confusion could be caused by the similarity of the two separate entrances, so it is important that David creates a pathway that aids orientation and defines a separate identity for each entrance and facility.

Draft Designs for Diamond Batch Pathways

David presented his draft designs in July 2005.

He has produced concepts for the 2 separate pathways leading to the separate entrances: for the 'Adult pathway' he plans to use 'natural' images that relax rather than stimulate. He will use vertical artworks in the form of recycled glass markers. For the 'Older Adult pathway' David has concentrated on surface relief using recycled glass blocks at the edges of the pathway.

David carried out 2 workshops with Priory School in April 2005. The workshops called 'Treading Carefully', involved children in creating masks and gaining a better understanding of mental health issues.
