Building on the Evidence: Moving On selected as a national Pathfinder Project by NHS Estates

Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP) and the University of the West of England (UWE ) were awarded £107,709 for Building on the Evidence - a research project to explore the impact of the three year Moving On programme of integrated public art commissions within the Trust.

The evaluation:

  • Explored the impact of the arts programme on patients' and staff experience of the environment
  • Explored the impact of the arts programme health and wellbeing, taking into account the diverse needs of user groups
  • Explored experiences of involvement and ownership in relation to the project
  • Identified the added value of arts based interventions in the management of transitions to new buildings and services
  • Identified implications and develop models of best practice which can be applied in the future to AWP and Trusts throughout the country

The study was undertaken by AWP and UWE in partnership, led by a research team based within UWE. It was a qualitative study using mixed methods. It drew upon documentary data, interviews and focus groups. The study spanned a two-year period. The research was multi-disciplinary and the project team included researchers from arts and social sciences disciplines. .
